Om, stylized as ॐ, is a 1995 Indian Kannada-language action crime film written and directed by Upendra. The film was produced by Parvathamma Rajkumar under the production company Sri Vajreshwari Combines. The film stars Shiva Rajkumar and Prema with Srishanthi, G. V. Shivanand, Sadhu Kokila in supporting roles with real-life gangsters - Bekkina Kannu Rajendra, Tanveer, Korangu Krishna and Jedaralli Krishnappa - portraying the role of gangsters in a small but important portion of the movie.[1]
Om was remade in Telugu as Omkaram (1997) starring Dr.Rajshekar and Prema which was also directed by Upendra. Hamsalekha was also the music director of the Telugu remake and retained the songs from this movie in the Telugu version.[3] The movie was unofficially remade in Hindi as Arjun Pandit.[4] UP gangster Vikas Dubey was reported to be an ardent fan of Arjun Pandit.[5]
Om 1995 Kannada Movie 19
The movie which was made under a budget of around 70 lakhs was the costliest film for Dr.Raj banner at that time. It made a pre-release business of around 2 crores.[6] The film became a successful venture at the box office and was declared an industry hit. It remains a cult classic film in Kannada cinema with a dedicated fan following among audience owing to its re-release every two weeks. This film has a Limca record for re-releasing more than 550 times.[7] The movie was reported to be the highest screened film in the history of Kannada cinema.[8]The movie has released 30 times in Kapali theatre, Bangalore which is a record.[9] On the occasion of completion of 25 years, Upendra had revealed that the core plot of the movie was based on a real-life person - Purshi who was his brother's friend.[10][11][12] The movie is credited for ushering in the genre of underworld mafia in a full-fledged manner in Kannada cinema.[13]
The movie crossed its 500th re - release mark in 2013.[24]As of March 2015, Om had been re-released over 550 times and in over 400 theatres across Karnataka.[25][26][7][27][28] On 12 March 2015, the film was re-released with Digital intermediate and DTS for the first time in over 100 theatres.[29] It was distributed by Kishore Films.[30][31]
Even though the film was released in 1995, its satellite rights was sold to Udaya TV in 2015 for a sum of 10 crores. The film had its television premiere on 15 August 2015 on the eve of Independence Day.[32] The amount is the highest for any Kannada film considering that the film is already 20 years old and has been released hundreds of times.[33] Video rights was released by Sri Ganesh Video.[34][35]
Note: Since there are no official figures for gross collections of Kannada movies, only releases since 1970 which were mentioned as highest grossers of the year in majority of the sources, have been considered for this section:
And after that it got huge demand for its remake rights in other languages and finally Telugu Hero Dr. Rajashekhar fetched for a record price for all 3 languages remake and convinced Upendra to himself direct in all the 3 languages with retaining certain technicians of kannada Om like Hamsalekha & Thriller Manju and adding Cameraman Sundarnath Suvarana & Editor R. Janardhan as new entry to other languages remake.
Film became biggest grosser of Kannada Film Industry in the year 1995 and celebrated its 100 days function organized at Central theatre in Mangalore with Dr.Raj Couple as chief guests and went to sweep major all awards in that year mainly Shivrajkumar & Prema won as best actor and actress and Upendra for screenplay and BC Gowrishankar for Cinematography in Karnataka State film awards 1995 .
Even though the film motivates real-life gangsters to leave the underworld and live a clean life, director Upendra brought real-life rowdies to make sure the message in the movie reached people effectively. Jedarahalli Krishnappa, Bekkina Kannu Rajendra, Tanveer, Korangu Krishna have acted in the movie. Upendra has also revealed once that it wasn't easy to approach them and make them act in the movie.
It is hard to define if the craze for Om originates from its unconventional story structure or from the fact that people didn't have access to the movie for the longest time. No DVDs. No video cassettes. No ripped copies on YouTube (if you don't count the grainy, skewed, bad quality theatre print that seemed to serve the purpose of documenting the reactions of the crowd more than the movie itself). For the longest time, the only way you could watch this movie was in the theatres. And what a treat it was. Every single time.
Like most movies by Upendra, the hero entry scene happens around the 20-minute mark. The scenes that preceded it only build up to that moment. And when the money shot happens, well, it satisfies you just right. I've watched Om many times over the years, but I still break into a smile every time I watch the scene where Satya, clad in a lungi, sitting on a metal chair brings the lighter to the cigarette dangling from his face with a purpose.
The movie featured several dreaded gangsters from the Bangalore Underground. Jedralli Krishnappa. Tanveer Ahmed. Korangu Krishna. Bekkinakannu Rajendra. Gangsters who were still active in the "field". No other director had done something so ridiculously risky before or after.
Even certain events that shaped the city's underworld were dramatised with painful accuracy. Dreaded don Jayaraj (K. Raj in the movie) was a victim of a shootout in the middle of the road. Oil Kumar (Oil Raja in the movie) was killed just outside his paramour's house. Both those killings were, "allegedly", masterminded and executed by Rai. Rai was the one who brought gun culture to the city's underworld scene. While the story is about Satya, the shadows of characters bigger than him continue to haunt us in the background.

When I watched the film on the first day of its re-release, I was surrounded by a large number of fans, eager to watch their hero in yet another re-run of this extremely popular film. The autowallah who ferried me to the theatre was also excited to know that I was watching this film for the first time, despite not understanding the language very well. The excitement among the audiences was infectious and some of it also rubbed on me, making me more excited to watch the film. Many of the audience members in my show created quite a racket by cheering and screaming enthusiastically during many of the key scenes and the songs. One of the guys from the audience jumped in front of the screen and bowed down to the almighty Shivarajkumar during one of the fight scenes. All of this happened, when the show saw only 75% attendance. I wonder what would have happened in case of a house full show. It surely would have been a sight to behold. And how can a movie buff not enjoy watching a movie when surrounded by such enthusiastic audience members?

Movies about hackers boomed in popularity towards the end of the 21st century. Ranging from cult classics such as The Matrix to OG hacker movies such as Sneakers or WarGames, these movies provided audiences with an inside look at the mysterious world of hacking.
Throughout the movie, Hathaway leads the series representing the rise of a fallen hero. Having the necessary skills, Hathaway may be the only person capable enough of stopping the dangerous motive behind these cyber attacks.
With that in mind, the details of this story play more into a Hollywood fantasy tale rather than a fictional reenactment of Mitnick's arrest. The reviews for this particular movie about hacking range widely with many calling it a poor portrayal of hacking and others referring to the exciting scenes throughout the film.
This movie highlights much of the process after actual hacking takes place but the story does a nice job of relaying how it feels in the day-to-day trenches of individuals working closely with hackers.
While not originally a hit, Hackers released in 1995 slowly became a cult classic. The story follows a group of high school hackers as they navigate through an unintentional corporate extortion conspiracy.
The Matrix comes in as perhaps the most popular movie on the entire list. While it certainly captures mass public interest from around the world, the story only portrays hacking during a few of its scenes.
